The enormous stretches of land from northernmost Canada to southern Argentina are brimming with brilliant historic sites to visit – there’s so much more than the famous names of Machu Picchu or Alcatraz (though I’d love to visit these!). So far, I’ve explored:

Brazil: the pretty colonial town of Paraty (photo above), nestling green mountains and the Atlantic and child of the gold trail.

Cuba: check out Trinidad, another stunning colonial town to compete with Brazil’s Paraty, and its nineteenth-century sugar plantations.
